This petition reflects the mobilisation of research communities, including younger scientists, the members of learned societies and of concerned citizens. ERC Starting Grant holders, organised in the Young Academy of Europe, are some of the first signatories of the petition. The petition is coordinated by the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE).

no-cuts-on-research.eu unites researchers and organisations across all scientific disciplines, including social sciences and humanities. Driving forces behind the movement include:
- the younger generation of researchers: The Young Academy of Europe has recently been founded by a group of ERC Starting Grant holders. They were quickly joined by other young researcher organisations such as Eurodoc, the European council for doctoral candidates and junior researchers and the Marie Curie Fellows Association.
- learned societies and scientific organisations, organised within the Initiative for Science in Europe. Having played an instrumental role in the creation of the European Research Council, ISE has been working for a stronger involvement of scientists in policy. ISE includes in its membership the major discipline specific learned societies as well as interdisciplinary organisations such as Euroscience.
- The petition is supported by university associations such as LERU and by research funders.
